Review of Getting Over It
Translate
Getting Over It is definitely an interesting game, which is based on simple physics, yet it will teach patience and dexterity which are not common in games. Originally created by Bennett Foddy, the game seemed to cause a lot of frustration while at the same time being quite addictive due to the high level of difficulty. It is not for the weak-kneed for those who dare embark in it; it will be an experience to laugh with and cherish.
Its main concept is to play with a hero, sitting in a pot, having only a hammer as a weapon to get to another level. The controls are well thought out to be somewhat challenging in of challenge to require some expertise and time to master. A misstep and one is sliding right back down the mountain with some of these routes taking hours to climb only to be lost in a matter of minutes. This is perhaps the design aspect that defines Getting Over It; it’s unforgiving but makes climbing feel like a victory.
The visualization is done in a minimalist way and the important information is highlighted in the best manner possible. The enemies and terrain are actually clear and are varied enough to create a variety which offer sufficient change in visuals even when the same levels are revisited many times. The key element which deserves to be called the true protagonist of the game is the narration. The entire time you’re playing through Two Tribes, there is philosophical commentary from Bennett Foddy himself, and guidance throughout the game, the players are encouraged during their failure attempts, and also during persistent tries. This definitely provides an additional dimension to the game, thus, is not just a mental exercise.
In fact, the game is quite challenging, but at the same time, it is quite entertaining – one can get hooked while playing Getting Over It. The feeling of success when you are able to a difficult level is gratifying and the game’s high level of difficulty is symbolic for determination to continue no matter what stands in your way. If endurance and skill game with rather engaging storyline are your cup of tea, then do not hesitate, try Getting Over It – just be prepared for frustrated moments while trying to get over it.
